While going through my bins of WIPs I spotted these two beauties I got last year from @jenkinsspindles. The larger one is a Carob Dragonfly and the smaller is a Mopane Finch. The blue fiber on both are samples of Rambouillet dyed by @abstractfiber. Both of these spindles are absolutely wonderful in their own way. The Dragonfly is a newer model and is such a nice size. The Finch is 16.2g making it twice the weight of most of my other Finches. The first two bobbins of 2 ply Acala cotton all skeined up! I decided to use the Figure 8 skeining method I learned from @abbysyarns. Traditionally, with this skeining method, you use your arms to wind the skein, but I figured I'd get super fatigued with all this yardage. I decided to set up my @akerworks ClampyKates to wind the skeins onto which worked quite well. I limited the skeins to approximately 200 yards each as I initially had a slight worry about applying too much pressure on the ClampyKates. They performed wonderfully for this use case! I'm super close to finishing my first handspun warp but this very last bit is the most difficult. I'm attempting the 4 selvage finish for the first time and it gets extremely difficult the further the gap is closed. It's been several days since I've worked on it, been distracted by other things but looking forward to getting back to this to finish it up. I've been spending some time with Danger Falcon. This is hand-dyed cotton by @longdrawjames. I plied this up at 50% speed. The two bobbins on the left were spun on the Sparrow and the two bobbins on the right feature one ply done on the Sparrow and one done on the Falcon. The Falcon is clearly the king of spinning cotton. The last 110ish grams of cotton is Pima and will be spun entirely on Falcon. I've gotten about 15.75 inches done so far and it appears that out of my 36 inch warp I've lost 3 inches. One of my goals with this warp was to give me an idea of take up loss and how much weft is being used. Though the amount of weft needed will increase with the beads so that isn't quite as relevant. I've been experimenting with the tension in my warp and weft to see how it affects the band. The tighter the weft the more rounder it becomes. Yesterday and today's progress on my first handspun warp. I've got about 9 inches done so far. I had a catastrophic failure earlier that involved my sonqopa shed inadvertently winding up on the opposite yarns and then it became quite the mess so I got to learn how to create a new sonqopa when that shed has been lost. It wasn't too bad though the fineness of the yarn did add to the challenge. Overall I'm quite pleased with how this is turning out and love the way the silk weft pops on the sides. My first foray into plyng khaitu(Andean weaving yarn) resulted in not enough twist so back on the spindle it went and I'm much happier with the resulting yarn. With more practice, I'll get better at judging whether or not I have enough twist for khaitu. It is not as much fun the second time around as an already plied ball is more squirrelly than a 2 ply plying ball. Towards the end of plying the first time around I discovered that laying the spindle in an opened TensiTamer while the spindle is either in bowl or on the carpet worked extremely well even when the spots where the yarn is wound on a narrow section like at the top which would cause trouble when held horizontally. I found that the spindle on carpet provided a nice amount of tension and then if I needed it to glide placing a bowl there worked well. Next up in the adventures of spinning khaitu (Andean weaving yarn)! After the figure 9 skeins are plied back up into plying balls the next step is to ply with a Kanti (plying spindle). I used this Chaj Chaj Kanti and I learned the proper way to spin it through @abbysyarns and Nilda of @centro_textiles_cusco. Kanti spindles are palm rolled which sends it shooting off like a flying top racing at super fast speeds. It's a load of fun to do and incredible to watch how fast the spindle spins. These fast speeds are what make them the ideal tool for making khaitu which requires an insane amount of plying twist well beyond stasis. I plied all 62.5g worth onto this one spindle and it went by so fast though towards the end the weight was becoming a little bit tiring so I let the spindle dance across a linoleum floor to make it easier on my arms that were not used to the weight. After the plying was finished I wound the yarn into balls to warp from but upon closer inspection I realized that all four yarns to varying degrees need MORE twist. To most spinners those yarns have more than enough twist but for khaitu they need a lot more than that. Back on the spindle they go! The next step in the khaitu(Andean weaving yarn process). Once the 2 ply plying balls have been created the plying balls are then skeined up into figure 8 skeins. As terrifying as these yarn blobs look the figure 8 skein keeps all of the singles in order to ensure an easy time winding off the skein. Traditionally singles are either left natural or are dyed so at this part of the process any singles that are destined to be naturally dyed would be tossed in a big pot of dye. Once the skeins are dry they are then ready to be wound back into plying balls. I used 4 @akerworks ClampyKates to wind my figure 8 skeins. The set up allowed me to easy keep tension as I would and easily manage the skein. When the skeins were dry they were slightly smaller so I had to move the ClampyKates in a bit to hold the smaller skeins. Winding from these skeins was hands down the most easy going winding of a skein experience I've ever had. The skeins shown here are after being washed. I used an @Akerworks AkerKate to hold my spindles while plying.
